The 1998 Dodge Durango was originally marketed as a sturdy truck-based SUV. It was designed to tow up to 8,950 lb and hold up to eight passengers when properly equipped. The 5.2 L Magnum V8 engine was replaced by 4.7 L PowerTech V8 for 2000. However, the 5.2 was still available in the models of early 2000. Special AWD performance version called the R/T was also released with a 5.9 L Magnum V8. In 1998, a Shelby S.P.360 in limited edition version was offered. It featured a supercharged .9 L Magnum V8 engine version. With 360 hp output (270 kW; 360 PS) and torque in 412 lb·ft (559 N·m).

The 1998 Dodge Durango exterior modifications include unique tires, wheels, bumpers and suspension. It came standard with Viper blue paint and two racing stripes down the truck center. It boasted a 7.1 seconds starts at 0 to 60 mph time. The top speed was able to reach 142 mph (229 km/h). 1998 as the very first model year for Durango was available only in 4WD.

1999 Dodge Durango was originally made available with 2WD. A 3.9L Magnum V6 engine was available for sold in few. For the 2nd year, minor changes were made with two new paint colors along with notable options. They are available including 6 in × 9 in (150 mm × 230 mm) steering wheel-mounted radio controls and heated rear view mirrors. The standard leather seats on SLT Plus models and body-color wheel flares became standard on SLT Plus and 4WD Models.
